Galatians 5:16-25

Galatians 5:16–25 defines the true Christian life with absolute clarity. “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Walking in the Spirit is not mystical or abstract; it means walking in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, exactly as written in 1 Peter 2:21–24. To walk in the Spirit is to live as Christ lived — without sin, without compromise, without acting according to the flesh.

The promise is clear and unconditional: if you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Not occasionally, not partially not at all. The flesh seeks to satisfy its impulses, its passions, its worldly cravings, but the Spirit leads in the opposite direction. A Spirit-led life is a life where the flesh is denied completely.

Verse 17 explains why compromise is impossible:
“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another.”
They are enemies. They cannot coexist. They cannot rule together. One must dominate, and the other must die. This raises a decisive question: Who lives in you? Is it the desires of the flesh, or the desires of the Spirit? There is no neutral ground.

Paul then lists the works of the flesh, which are in direct opposition to the Spirit: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful passions, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, heresies, envy, drunkenness, revelries, and everything similar. Paul is uncompromising: “Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” This alone destroys every doctrine that tolerates occasional sin.

In contrast, those who are led by the Spirit act according to the will of the Father. The fruit of the Spirit  love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control  is the visible evidence that sin no longer reigns. Where the Spirit rules, the flesh is subdued.

Verse 24 is foundational and final:
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
This crucifixion is once for all. The flesh is not restrained, negotiated with, or improved  it is crucified. A crucified flesh does not revive. A crucified flesh does not occasionally act. A crucified flesh does not return to its old desires.

To belong to Jesus Christ means to live in this reality every day: walking in the Spirit, following Christ’s example, never fulfilling the desires of the flesh, and living in a state where sin has no place. This is normal Christianity  a life governed by the Spirit, marked by victory, purity, and obedience, without sin, permanently and without exception.
