Luke 10:25–26 Jesus Confirms That the Law of God Leads to Eternal Life
Luke 10:25–26
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”
Jesus does not direct this man toward “faith alone,” nor toward an abstract belief detached from obedience.
He directs him straight to the Law of God, the moral commandments, the divine standard of holiness that governs eternal life.
Jesus asks:
“What is written in the Law?”
This question reveals His theological position: the Law contains the answer to the question of salvation.
The words of the Law are divine.
They are truth, purity, holiness, and life.
John 17:17
Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth.
The Law sanctifies because it is truth.
It reveals the heart of God, His will, His character, His holiness.
To obey the Law is to walk in the very life of God Himself.
The Law of God Is the Path of Eternal Life
Proverbs 28:9
He who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.
The antinomian movements of today reject this truth.
Whenever we affirm:
“one must conform to God’s Law,”
“one must obey the commandments to be saved,”
they accuse us of pride, self-righteousness, or denying the sacrifice of Christ.
But this accusation is false, wicked, and completely blind.
To obey God is not pride.
To keep His commandments is not boasting.
To love the Law is not self-exaltation.
Pleasing God is the essence of humility.
We seek no credit, no glory, no merit.
All glory belongs to Jesus Christ for His atoning blood, which forgives past sins and restores man to a state where he can walk in holiness and keep God’s commandments.
Holiness Without Sin Is the Normal Life of the Kingdom
Eternal life is not a reward for human performance.
It is the natural effect of a heart living:
in perfect holiness,
without sin,
according to God’s Law,
guided by the Holy Spirit
in thought, word, deed, imagination, and conduct.
This is what it means to be sanctified by truth.
This is what it means to live in the will of God.
Jesus calls every disciple to complete righteousness and total obedience.
Anything less is a distortion of His Gospel.
Jesus Declares Powerfully That the Man Is “Not Far From the Kingdom” BECAUSE He Recognized That the Law Saves
When this man answered correctly
that the Law commands love for God and neighbor
Jesus did not correct him.
Jesus did not redirect him to “faith alone.”
Jesus did not accuse him of self-righteousness.
Instead, Jesus approved his answer.
And Scripture tells us:
“You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”
Why?
Because this man recognized that the Law of God is the path to eternal life.
He understood that obedience, holiness, and complete love for God are salvific in nature.
Jesus affirmed him because he acknowledged the truth that modern evangelical movements reject:
The Law of God saves the one who lives it in perfect holiness.
The commandments lead to eternal life.
The Kingdom belongs to those who obey.
This is not weakness.
This is the Gospel of Christ.
Jesus publicly declared that the one who acknowledges the saving role of the Law is standing at the threshold of eternal life.
Jesus Confirms the Saving Power of God’s Law !
Jesus does not oppose Law and salvation.
He unites them.
He directs men toward the Law.
He approves those who submit to it.
He declares them “near the Kingdom.”
Any doctrine that minimizes the Law, rejects holiness, or excuses occasional sin is a false gospel.
Jesus taught:
The Law sanctifies.
The Law gives life.
The Law directs to eternal life.
The Law must be lived in perfect holiness.
And He declares near the Kingdom the one who recognizes this saving truth.
