For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
(Romans 3:23) is a universal truth for humanity often misinterpreted to indiscriminately include regenerate Christians among those living in sin. This passage, however, is not addressing believers transformed by God’s grace, but
describes the general condition of humanity before redemption.
Paul here emphasizes that all men, without exception, have
sinned and are separated from God, incapable of attaining His
glory or having a mutual relationship.
This universal statement highlights the absolute need for the redemptive
work of Christ. Once an individual believes in Jesus Christ and
is regenerated by the Holy Spirit, he is no longer under this
condition of falling short of the glory of God. The regenerated
Christian has been justified, sanctified, and restored to a living
relationship with God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
This verse, therefore, should not be used to minimize the transforming power of the new birth in Christ.
Born-again Christians are not slaves to sin, but are called to walk in the
light, reflecting the glory of God.
Ephesians 5:8-9 You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. For the fruit of light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.
