John 17:3

John 17:3
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

This verse reveals a foundational truth: eternal life consists in knowing God, and to know God is impossible without knowing His heart, His will, and His Law.
Biblical “knowledge” is never intellectual; it is relational, moral, and obedient.
To know God is:

to know the thoughts of His heart,

to understand His will,

to walk in His commandments,

to reflect His holiness and purity in one’s entire being.

The Law is the expression of God’s heart.
The Law is the revelation of God’s will.
The Law is the pathway to union with God.

Therefore, eternal life flows from this living knowledge:
a life fully conformed to the Law of God and purified by faith in Jesus Christ, the Son who was sent to open the door of reconciliation and forgiveness.

Knowing God Means Obeying His Law With the Whole Being

To “know God” means to know His character, His values, His moral purity, and His holiness — all of which are revealed through His Law.
One cannot claim to know God while refusing His commandments; such a claim is a lie.
True knowledge of God transforms:

the mind,

the heart,

the imagination,

the intentions,

the behavior,

the entire conduct of life.

It produces a state of complete holiness without sin, because the one who knows God desires nothing but His will.

Scripture Confirms This: Knowledge of God = Obedience

Jeremiah 9:24
“Let him who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Me.”

This knowledge is active and moral.
It requires purity of heart, obedience to God, and full conformity to His Law.

Thus, the Law of God and faith in Jesus Christ become the two sources that shape eternal life:

the Law reveals the will of God and demands holiness,

faith in Christ brings forgiveness, regeneration, and the strength to live the Law perfectly.

To separate these two is to destroy the Gospel.

The Word “Salvation” Includes Both Law and Faith

In Scripture, salvation is not limited to forgiveness.
It is the total deliverance of man:

forgiven by the blood of Christ,

transformed by grace,

preserved by obedience to the Law,

perfected in holiness,

and finally admitted to eternal fellowship with God.

Salvation contains both the Law and Faith, inseparably united.
Faith restores us;
the Law maintains us;
holiness completes us;
and eternal life crowns us.
