3 John 1:2

3 John 1:2 reveals what true prosperity really is:

“Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.”

The apostle John clearly establishes a divine order: the prosperity of the soul comes first. True prosperity is not measured by money, possessions, success, or comfort, but by the spiritual condition of the inner man—a soul purified, upright, holy, and pleasing to God. This is the highest form of wealth, far above all earthly riches combined.

John does not preach the prosperity gospel of modern charismatic movements, which reduce God’s blessing to material abundance and physical comfort. On the contrary, he teaches that external well-being has value only insofar as it reflects an inward, spiritual prosperity. A soul rich in holiness, truth, obedience, and purity is the greatest treasure a man can possess.

This truth perfectly aligns with the parable of Jesus where a man sells all that he has to buy the field containing the hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44). That treasure is not gold or silver, but the Kingdom of God within, a life transformed, a conscience purified, and a heart fully surrendered to God. The man joyfully gives up everything else, because nothing compares to the value of this treasure.

It also echoes Jesus’ words to the rich young ruler:

“Sell what you have, give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.”

Jesus was not condemning wealth in itself, but revealing that true riches are not found in possessions, but in a soul that is free, obedient, and fully devoted to God. Earthly wealth can easily become an obstacle when it replaces the pursuit of holiness and eternal life.

Thus, the real prosperity John speaks of is eternal, not temporary. It is the wealth of a soul that walks in truth, lives in righteousness, and abides in purity before God. This prosperity cannot be bought, inherited, or achieved through human effort it is the fruit of a life fully given to God.

Everything else fades.
This alone remains.
