Romans 8:6-8
For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Those who live according to the flesh cannot please God.
This passage highlights the absolute contrast between those who live according to the flesh and those who live according to the Spirit. Paul explains that living according to the flesh—being guided by carnal desires, rebellion, and self-will—leads to spiritual death and places man in a state of hostility toward God. The flesh is incapable of submitting to the Law of God because it refuses obedience, purity, and holiness.
On the other hand, living by the Spirit means walking under the guidance and voice of the Holy Spirit, who leads to life and peace. The man led by the Spirit submits to the Law of God not by constraint, but by love. He naturally fulfills the divine commandments because his heart is renewed, purified, and oriented toward righteousness. The fruits of the Spirit are the expression of a life transformed in which obedience flows from love, and holiness becomes a natural condition of the soul.
In conclusion, Romans 8:6-8 reminds us with force that only those who renounce the flesh and walk by the Spirit can please God, because only they obey the Law of God in authentic freedom and in sincere love. This voluntary submission to divine standards is the key to spiritual life, purity, and total holiness.
Romans 8:13
For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if you through the Spirit put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
In this verse, Paul highlights man’s personal responsibility in the fight against sin. He teaches that sanctification is not passive but a cooperation between man and the Holy Spirit. Putting to death the deeds of the body means refusing every compromise with sin, extinguishing fleshly desires, and actively rejecting everything that leads away from God.
Walking by the Spirit is not merely resisting sin; it is embracing the life of obedience that the Law of God requires. If the Spirit dwells in us, we will naturally accomplish what the Law demands—not by fear or constraint, but by love. The Spirit writes the Law on the heart, making holiness the normal state of the believer and sinlessness the expected fruit of a life submitted to God.
Thus, Romans 8:13 confirms the unbreakable biblical truth: eternal life belongs only to those who, through the Spirit, kill sin and walk in total obedience.
